## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AT ABOUT 40 NM NORTH OF RDU AIRPORT, AT 17,000 ALTITUDE, PILOT NOTED SMOKE FROM BEHIND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. PANEL PULLED AWAY AND SMOKE DEVELOPED TO FLAMES FROM THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION TO THE PILOT'S WINDSHIELD. PILOT REQUESTED DESCENT. ATC UNABLE. PILOT DECLARED EMERGENCY, AND COMMENCED DESCENT AND GOT VECTORS TO RDU ILS. PILOT GOT THE EMERGENCY CHECKLIST AND SECURED THE WINDSHIELD HEAT AS INDICATED IN THE CHECKLIST. THE FLAMES THEN DWINDLED AND WENT OUT. THE PILOT SHOT THE ILS APPROACH TO THE RDU AIRPORT WHERE AN UNEVENTFUL LANDING WAS MADE. TAXIED TO THE RAMP. FIREMEN CHECKED BEHIND PANEL AND AVIONICS FOR FIRE OR OTHER DAMAGE. NONE FOUND. OPERATOR IS TO HAVE WINDSHIELD REPLACED AND SHIP OLD ONE TO NTSB AS REQUESTED BY THEM.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL06IA071](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL06IA071), Apr 27, 2006: Beech C90A (N90CH), Raleigh, NC, incident, minor damage. Probable cause: The inadequate manufacturing process, which resulted in a windshield fire and subsequent emergency landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
