(-23) AT APPROXIMATELY 1815 ADT, ON MAY 24, 2006, THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO LAND HIS CESSNA 180 ON A 2500' GRAVEL AIRSTRIP EIGHT MILES EAST OF SOLDOTNA, ALASKA. THE WEATHER WAS VFR WITH A 10-15 KNOT RIGHT CROSSWIND. WHILE PERFORMING A WHEEL LANDING TO COUNTER THE CROSSWIND, HE BOUNCED SEVERAL TIMES AND WAS NOT IN TOTAL CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT. AS THE AIRCRAFT SLOWED IT WEATHERVANED INTO THE WIND AND THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE RIGHT-TURNING TENDENCY. AS HE APPLIED BRAKES TO STOP THE TURN, THE LEFT LANDING GEAR STRUT BROKE OFF WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE FUSELAGE. THE AIRCRAFT FELL ONTO ITS LEFT SIDE SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGING THE LEFT WING AND PROPELLER. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO A STOP ON THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT WAS NOT INJURED.
