(-23) ON TAKE OFF OF RUNWAY 34, THE EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT CRASHED JUST OFF AIRPORT PROPERTY. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED. THERE WAS NO FIRE. THE TWO OCCUPANTS WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED AND TRANSPORTED TO WASHOE MEDICAL CENTER IN RENO, NV, VIA HELICOPTER. DURING A BED SIDE INTERVIEW OF THE PILOT, THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^ STATED THAT DURING THE TAKE-OFF HE HEARD A LOUD POP SOUND AND CONTINUED THE TAKE-OFF AND CLIMB. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^ STATED THAT HE HAD LOST ENGINE POWER IN THE LEFT TURN, AND SOMETIME BETWEEN THE LOSS OF POWER AND THE CRASH HE HAD PUSHED IN THE MIXTURE TO FULL RICH, PUMPED THROTTLES AND PUT FUEL BOOST TOO LOW. A WITNESS STATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT CLIMBED TO HEIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY THREE STORIES AND MADE A HARD LEFT TURN AND HIT THE GROUND AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. WITNESSES HAVE STATED THE AIRCRAFT ENGINE WAS SPUTTERING BEFORE GOING QUIET. ALSO, A WITNESS STATED THAT AT THE RUN UP AREA FOR RUNWAY 34 THE ENGINE DID NOT SOUND RIGHT AND WAS RUNNING ROUGH JUST BEFORE THE AIRCRAFT TOOK OFF.
