## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT BEGAN TAKEOFF IN PA-18-150 FROM RUNWAY 19R AT BIRCHWOOD AIRPORT, CHUGIAK, ALASKA. AFTER APPLICATION OF FULL POWER, AS AIRCRAFT WAS ACCELERATING, THE LEFT BRAKE LOCKED. A TURN TO THE LEFT ENSUED. THE PILOT ABORTED THE TAKEOFF AND APPLIED RIGHT BRAKE. THE AIRCRAFT SLOWED BUT DEPARTED THE RUNWAY TO THE LEFT SIDE, COMING TO STOP IN AN UNIMPROVED AREA. DURING THE DEPARTURE FROM THE RUNWAY THE AIRCRAFT ROCKED FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AND THE RIGHT WING TIP AND ELEVATOR STRUCK THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT WING AND RIGHT ELEVATOR. THE PILOT AND PASSENGER EXITED THE AIRCRAFT WITHOUT INJURY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC06LA070](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC06LA070), Jun 3, 2006: Piper PA-18-150 (N7452J), Birchwood, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper servicing/adjustment of the main landing gear brakes, which resulted in a locked brake and a loss of control while taxiing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
