## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE AIRMAN WAS MAKING AN APPROACH TO A 700 FOOT GRASS STRIP ON THE BANKS OF THE ADROSCOGGIN RIVER IN TURNER, MAINE. THIS STRIP IS LOCATED WITH THE SEAPLANE BASE AT TWITCHELLS AIRPORT (3B5) IN TURNER, MAINE. THE STRIP HAS BEEN USED FOR MANY YEARS AS A WAY TO DELIVER AIRCRAFT TO THE SEAPLANE BASE TO HAVE FLOATS INSTALLED FOR SEAPLANE OPERATIONS. THIS PILOT HAS MADE THIS LANDING MANY TIMES. THE APPROACH IS OVER THE WATER AND THE PILOT STATED THAT HE DEVELOPED A SINK RATE THAT HE COULD NOT ARREST WITH POWER APPLICATION. THE AIRCRAFT LANDING GEAR STRUCK THE RIVERBANK 5-6 INCHES BELOW THE RUNWAY SURFACE. THE GEAR CAME OFF AND STRUCK THE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER. THE AIRPLANE SKIDDED STRAIGHT AHEAD AND CAME TO REST UPRIGHT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC06CA140](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC06CA140), Jun 6, 2006: Cessna A185E (N185RW), Turner, ME, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to obtain the proper touchdown point, resulting in a runway undershoot, and substantial damage to the airplane.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
