## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JUNE 8, 2006 AT 13:15PDT N5136X, A CESSNA 206 AIRCRAFT COLLIDED WITH TREES ADJACENT TO INTERSTATE 90 AT THE TOP OF MULLAN PASS AT 4,630 FEET MSL. THE PILOT AND SINGLE PASSENGER RECEIVED FATAL INJURIES AS A RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THIS AIRPLANE WAS OPERATED BY A PART 135 AIR CARRIER, AIR TRANSFER SERVICES OF KENT, WASHINGTON. THE AIRPLANE WAS ON ITS SECOND LEG OF A FLIGHT FROM KENT, WASHINGTON TO MISSOULA, MONTANA AFTER A FUEL STOP IN COEUR D'ALENE, IDAHO. WITNESSES OBSERVED N5136X FLYING EAST-BOUND OVER INTERSTATE 90 NEAR KELLOGG, AND MULLAN IDAHO. ONE WITNESS DRIVING EAST-BOUND ON INTERSTATE 90 NEAR MULLAN, IDAHO WAS A COMMERCIAL PILOT FOR THE US FOREST SERVICE BASED IN MISSOULA, MONTANA. SHE STATED THAT THE TOP OF MULLAN PASS WAS COMPLETELY FOGGED IN WITH GROUND FOG ON THE LEEWARD MONTANA SIDE TOO. WHEN SHE WITNESSED THE PLANE FLY OVERHEAD TOWARD MULLAN PASS SHE NOTED THE TIME AT 14:15 MDT, AND "KNEW THE PLANE WOULD NOT CLEAR THE PASS" IN VFR CONDITIONS. NO MECHANICAL PROBLEMS WERE DISCOVERED IN THE POST CRASH INVESTIGATION. WEATHER BRIEFINGS WERE OBTAINED FROM THE SEATTLE FSS BY THE CHARTER PILOT VIA TELEPHONE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA06FA115](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA06FA115), Jun 8, 2006: Cessna TU206G (N5136X), Mullan, ID, substantial damage, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's VFR flight into IMC and his subsequent failure to maintain terrain clearance. The pilot's inadequate inflight planning/decision, mountain obscuration, trees and high terrain were factors.
