## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT STATED THAT HE DEPARTED SKYHARBOR AIRPORT AT APPROXIMATELY 6:00 PM ON JUNE 13, 2006, TO SPRAY 75 ACRES OF BEANS. DUE TO LOCAL RAIN SHOWERS HE WAS UNABLE TO COMPLETE THE JOB; THEREFORE HE RETURNED TO SKYHARBOR. WHEN HE WAS ON SHORT FINAL APPROACH TO SKYHARBOR RUNWAY 24, DURING POWER REDUCTION, "THE ENGINE EXPLODED AND FIRE AND SHRAPNEL SHOT THROUGH THE ENGINE COWLINGS". THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND THE AIRPLANE INCURRED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE ON SCENE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE AIRPLANE WAS CONSUMED BY FIRE FROM THE PROPELLER AFT TO THE COCKPIT. EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE BY THE INSPECTOR REVEALED THREE LARGE HOLES IN THE TURBINE SECTION WITH SEVERAL OF THE INTERNAL TURBINE COMPONENTS MISSING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL06LA093](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL06LA093), Jun 14, 2006: Ayres S2R-G6 (N6133T), Selma, AL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The loss of engine power during the approach to land due to an uncontained turbine failure, which resulted in an in-flight fire.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
