## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING TAKEOFF FROM A VERY NARROW (20 FT.) PRIVATE GRASS STRIP IN CARIBOU, MAINE, THE PILOT SWERVED OFF THE RUNWAY. HE CONTINUED HIS TAKEOFF IN TALL GRASS AND WAS ABLE TO BECOME AIRBORNE AFTER USING 2/3 OF THE RUNWAY. HE MAINTAINED A HIGH ANGLE OF ATTACK ON THE AIRCRAFT. THIS RESULTED IN NO CLIMB PERFORMANCE. IN THIS CONFIGURATION, HE STRUCK A TREE AT THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE IMPACT SHEARED OFF THE TOP 20 FT. OF THE TREE. THE AIRCRAFT THEN PLUMMETED NOSE FIRST INTO THE GROUND. THE PILOT MANAGED TO CRAWL CLEAR OF THE WRECKAGE BEFORE RESCUE PERSONNEL ARRIVED. HE HAS COMPOUND FRACTURES OF HIS RIGHT ANKLE AND MULTIPLE FRACTURES OF HIS LEFT LEG. HIS DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCIDENT AND ITS CAUSE IS IDENTICAL TO THE FINDINGS OF THE FAA IIC. THE PILOT WAS COUNSELED. CASE CLOSED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC06CA146](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC06CA146), Jun 14, 2006: Theordore Jankowski Rans S-12 (N248PC), Caribou, ME, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control which resulted in a subsequent impact with trees. A factor in the accident was the unmowed area of vegetation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
