## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) UPON ARRIVAL AT THE ACCIDENT SITE OF 1181 WEST STATE ROAD 39, MOORESVILLE, IN, THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE. THE INSTRUCTOR/PILOT WAS GIVING DUAL INSTRUCTION TO THE EXPERIMENTAL HELICOPTER BUILDER AND IT WAS IN PHASE I CERTIFICATION. THE INSTRUCTOR/PILOT SMELLED SOMETHING HOT AND BOTH OCCUPANTS LOOKED BACK AT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND SAW BLACK SMOKE. THE HELICOPTER WAS LANDED AND THEN CAUGHT ON FIRE. CONTAINMENT OF THE FIRE WAS TRIED WITH THE ONBOARD FIRE EXTINGUISHER, TWO LARGER EXTINGUISHERS, AND A LOW WATER FLOW GARDEN HOSE. AFTER REVIEW OF THE INFORMATION, THE BEST CASE SCENARIO IS A FUEL LEAK WITHIN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT CAUSING A FIRE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
