## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING ROLL OUT AFTER UNEVENTFUL LANDING THE TAILWHEEL COMMENCED TO SHIMMY AND SHAKE. PILOT ADDED POWER AND ATTEMPTED TO LIFT TAIL TO RELIEVE THE TAILWHEEL SHIMMY/SHAKING. THIS AIRCRAFT HAS DUAL-PUCK DISC BRAKES WHICH ARE EXTREMELY POWERFUL, COMBINED WITH ADDED POWER AND THE SHORT COUPLING (DISTANCE BETWEEN THE MAIN LANDING GEAR AND THE TAILWHEEL) MAKE THE AIRCRAFT SENSITIVE TO RUDDER/BRAKE APPLICATION. RUDDER AND BRAKE INPUTS CONTRIBUTED TO THIS AIRCRAFT DEPARTING THE RUNWAY INTO THE GRASS. AFTER DEPARTING THE RUNWAY THE RIGHT TAILWHEEL STEERING SPRING CAME OFF THE AIRCRAFT WHICH LEFT LIMITED RUDDER/TAILWHEEL STEERING AUTHORITY. UNEVEN APPLICATION OF THE BRAKES AND FORWARD MOMENTUM ALLOWED THE AIRCRAFT TO YAW TO THE RIGHT CAUSING THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR TO FOLD UNDER AND COLLAPSE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI06CA159](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI06CA159), Jun 18, 2006: Piper PA-22-135 (N1270C), Nebraska City, NE, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing rollout and the resulting ground loop. A contributing factor was the excessive tail wheel steering (rudder) input by the pilot.

## Other reports on N1270C (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
