## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 06-20-06 AT APPROXIMATELY 7:20 P.M. LOCAL TIME, A CESSNA 172, N8649U, WAS CRASHED AND DESTROYED SHORTLY AFTER TAKE-OFF FROM MAGEHEE RESTAURANT'S GRASS STRIP, NEAR MARIETTA, OKLAHOMA. THE PRIVATE PILOT, ^PRIVACY DATA OMITT^ ELECTED A TAKEOFF FROM RUNWAY 35, A 2450-FOOT LONG, BY 55-FOOT WIDE GRASS STRIP THAT SLOPED DOWNHILL, WITH A KNOWN 15 KNOT TAILWIND. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA ^ STATED THAT HE CONFIGURED THE AIRPLANE FOR TAKE-OFF WITH 20 DEGREES OF FLAP. HE STATED THAT THE CLIMB PERFORMANCE WAS NORMAL UNTIL HE REACHED TREE-TOP LEVEL. AT THAT TIME THE AIRSPEED DROPPED TO ABOUT 40 MPH AND THE AIRCRAFT STOPPED CLIMBING. HE STATED THAT WHEN IT BECAME OBVIOUS THAT HE WAS NOT GOING TO CLEAR THE TREES, HE BEGAN TO MANUEVER IN AN ATTEMPT TO TURN THE AIRCRAFT IN ORDER TO MISS THE TREES. THE AIRCRAFT BECAME INVERTED AND CRASHED INTO A HEAVILY WOODED AREA, RESTING NOSE DOWN AND INVERTED. AS A RESULT, THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA ^ RECEIVED SERIOUS INJURIES, AND THE PASSENGER RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES. BOTH OCCUPANTS WERE ABLE TO EGRESS FROM THE AIRCRAFT, THROUGH THE BROKEN WINDSCREEN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DFW06CA164](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DFW06CA164), Jun 21, 2006: Cessna 172F (N8649U), Marietta, OK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper weather evaluation. Contributing factors were the strong tailwind and the high density altitude.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
