## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) N8690M EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE WHERE THE #4 CONNECTING ROD SEPARATED FROM THE CRANKSHAFT AND PUNCHED THROUGH THE ENGINE CASE, CAUSING A LOSS OF POWER THAT REQUIRED AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON A REMOTE BEACH. DURING THE ROLL-OUT, THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED IN THE SOFT SAND, CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE SUPPORT STRUCTURE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND NO OTHER DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. ENGINE TEAR-DOWN INSPECTION SHOWED THAT THE #4 CONNECTING ROD BEARING FAILED DUE TO LACK OF LUBRICATION, CAUSING THE CONNECTING ROD TO SEPARATE FROM THE CRANKSHAFT. THE REASON FOR THE LACK OF LUBRICATION IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC06LA084](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC06LA084), Jul 1, 2006: Beech P35 (N8690M), Gustavus, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The fracture of an engine connecting rod during cruise flight, which resulted in a forced landing on a beach, a collapsed nose landing gear, and substantial damage to the fuselage.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
