## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT WAS ON A VFR FLIGHT PLAN FROM L39 TO 1R4. WEATHER WAS VFR AT DESTINATION. ON ARRIVAL, PILOT MADE A VISUAL APPROACH TO RUNWAY 1 AT WOODWORTH (1R4). HE STATED THAT THE WINDS WERE OUT OF THE NORTH AND THAT THE APPROACH WAS NORMAL UNTIL ABOUT FIVE FEET ABOVE THE RUNWAY. AT THAT POINT THE AIRCRAFT WAS HIT BY A GUST OF WIND AND THE NOSE PITCHED UP AND THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED TO THE LEFT. THE PILOT STATED THE STALL WARNING HORN ACTIVATED AND, FEARING A STALL, HE APPLIED POWER AND PUSHED THE NOSE DOWN. FROM THIS POINT ON, THE PILOT WAS FIGHTING TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT WITHOUT SUCCESS. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED DOWN THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, EVENTUALLY CROSSING THE AIRFIELD FENCE AND ADJACENT RAILROAD TRACKS, COLLIDING WITH A TREE LINE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRACKS, APPROXIMATELY 2000 FEET DOWN THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. AFTER COLLIDING WITH THE TREES, THE AIRCRAFT SPUN AROUND AND FELL TO THE GROUND, COMING TO REST WITH THE AIRCRAFT FACING THE DIRECTION OF APPROACH WITH A PORTION OF THE LEFT WING ON THE RAILROAD TRACKS. THE PILOT EGRESSED FROM THE AIRCRAFT WITH NO APPARENT INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DFW06CA190](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DFW06CA190), Jul 22, 2006: Piper PA-28-140 (N9952W), Woodworth, LA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from a tree. Contributing factors were the sudden wind shift and the gusty wind conditions.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
