## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AT 4:55 P.M. BONANZA 999AJ, A B-36TC/G DEPARTED RW 17 AT 1F0. OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE AT THE AIRPORT WAS 102 F. WINDS WERE 100 AT 11 KNOTS GUSTING TO 18 KNOTS. APPROXIMATELY 15 FEET FROM THE GROUND ON TAKEOFF, THE FRONT COCKPIT DOOR OPENED. THE PILOT MADE A DECISION TO DO A GO AROUND. THE GO AROUND WAS UNEVENTFUL UNTIL CROSSING THE NUMBERS ON FINAL. A PROLONGED CROSSWIND GUST CAUSED PILOT TO LOWER THE LEFT WIND AND USE MORE RIGHT RUDDER. THEN THE GUST DISSIPATED ABRUPTLY AND THE PLANE QUICKLY MOVED (OVERCORRECTED FOR THE CROSSWIND) TO THE LEFT EDGE OF THE RUNWAY. PILOT GAVE FULL POWER WITH FULL RPM AND FULL MIXTURE ALREADY IN PLACE, TO ATTEMPT A GO AROUND. SEEING THAT HE WAS STILL SINKING THE PILOT MADE AN ERROR BY ATTEMPTING TO CORRECT THE SINK BY LIFTING THE LANDING GEAR WHILE ATTEMPTING TO LEVEL THE WINGS. THE PLANE'S LEFT WING AND FUSELAGE CONTACTED THE EDGE OF THE RUNWAY AT THE SAME TIME AND THE PLANE SLID INTO THE GRASS. THE OCCUPANTS WERE UNHARMED. DAMAGE WAS SUSTAINED TO THE LEFT WING TIP, THE PROPELLER, AND THE BOTTOM OF THE FUSELAGE. LIKELY DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE AS THE CONTACT OCCURRED WITH FULL POWER.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
