## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT DEPARTED ON A PLANNED ENDURANCE FLIGHT AT 1220PM LOCAL FROM JULIAN, PA TO WILLIAMSPORT, PA TO CLEARFIELD, PA, RETURNING TO JULIAN, PA (79N) IN A SCHEMPP-HIRTH DISCUS 2CT MOTORGLIDER. UPON ARRIVING AT CLEARFIELD, PILOT ELECTED TO CONTINUE TO DUBOIS, PA AND THEN RETURN TO JULINA. DURING THE FLIGHT SEGMENT BETWEEN DUBOIS AND JULIAN THE PILOT WAS NOT ABLE TO MAINTAIN SUFFICIENT ALTITUDE TO REACH JULIAN, PA. HE DEPLOYED THE MOTOR AND LANDING GEAR NEAR MID STATE AIRPORT (PSB) IN ANTICIPATION OF LANDING PSB. HE ENCOUNTERED ASCENDING AIR AND WAS ABLE TO REGAIN SUFFICIENT ALTITUDE TO CONTINUE TOWARDS 79N AND RETRACTED THE MOTOR. APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES WEST OF 79N, HE ENCOUNTERED DESCENDING AIR AND DEPLOYED THE MOTOR BUT COULD NOT ACQUIRE SUFFICIENT AIRSPEED TO START THE MOTOR. THE DESCENT CONTINUED AND WHILE ATTEMPTING AN OFF AIRPORT LANDING, THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED A PARKED VEHICLE AND ROOF STRUCTURE OF A PRIVATE RESIDENCE, APPROXIMATELY TWO MILES WEST OF 79N. PILOT RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES DURING THE ACCIDENT AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC06CA198](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC06CA198), Aug 8, 2006: Schempp-Hirth Discus-2CT (N93FR), Julian, PA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's delayed decision to restart the glider's engine. A factor in the accident was a loss of thermal lift.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
