## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT IN COMMAND OF N620PA, WHO WAS ALSO THE PILOT FLYING, ARRIVED IN THE KANSAS CITY, MO AREA IN VMC CONDITIONS, OPERATING UNDER PART 91. THE CREW HAD CANCELED THEIR IFR FLIGHT PLAN WITH KANSAS CITY INTERNATIONAL CONTROL TOWER (MCI). THE PILOT STATED THAT HE HAD RECEIVED RADAR VECTORS FROM MCI TO A LEFT BASE FOR RUNWAY 27 AT THE EAST KANSAS CITY AIRPORT (3GV), GRAIN VALLEY, MISSOURI, WHICH WAS THE DESTINATION AIRPORT. WHILE ON FINAL APPROACH, THE PILOT STATED THAT HE WAS MAINTAINING THE PROPER APPROACH PATH AS INDICATED BY THE VASI SYSTEM ON RUNWAY 27. ON SHORT FINAL THE PILOT STATED THAT HE MAY HAVE STARTED THE FLARE TOO HIGH, RESULTING IN A LOSS OF AIRSPEED AND EXCESSIVE SINK RATE. THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO ARREST THE SINK RATE BEFORE ALLOWING THE LANDING GEAR TO STRIKE A FENCE AND TOUCHDOWN SHORT OF THE RUNWAY WITH A HARD LANDING. THIS RESULTED IN THE MAIN LANDING GEAR COLLAPSING AS THE AIRPLANE ROLLED DOWN THE RUNWAY. ATO TECH OPS VERIFIED THAT THE RUNWAY 27 VASI WAS WITHIN CERTIFIABLE LIMITS LATER THAT AFTERNOON.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI06LA244](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI06LA244), Aug 17, 2006: Fairchild SA227-AC (N620PA), Grain Valley, MO, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot not maintaining clearance from the fence. Contributing factors were the pilot's fatigue and the fence.

## Other reports on N620PA (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19920626057001I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920626057001I), Jun 26, 1992: Swrngn SA227AC (N620PA), Dillingham, AK. Near midair collisiion during local approach to airport. Banked left to avoid N75941 in traffic pattern.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
