## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON AUGUST 23, 2006, THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA ^ WAS FLYING AT THE LARAMIE AIRPORT PERFORMING AEROBATIC MANEUVERS. HE FLEW OVER RUNWAY 03 AT APPROXIMATELY THIRTY FEET ABOVE THE RUNWAY. WHEN HE GOT TOWARDS THE END OF THE RUNWAY HE PULLED UP AT A VERY STEEP INCLINE AND THE RIGHT WING FOLDED OVER THE CANOPY. THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED UPSIDE DOWN AND IMPACTED THE RUNWAY AND BURNED IN A FIELD AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND THE PILOT'S INJURIES WERE FATAL. VANS AIRCRAFT HAS A WING SPAR KIT TO IMPROVE THE SPAR ON THE RV-3S, BUT THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA ^ DID NOT INSTALL THIS KIT ON HIS AIRCRAFT. ACCORDING TO ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ A MECHANIC THAT HAS WORKED ON N43EM, STATED THAT THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA ^ WAS AWARE THAT THE SPAR KIT WAS AVAILABLE AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY VANS AIRCRAFT, BUT REFUSED TO INSTALL THE KIT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DEN06LA116](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DEN06LA116), Aug 24, 2006: Baker RV-3AB (N43EM), Laramie, WY, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The in-flight failure of the right wing spar during aerobatic flight. Contributing to the accident was the owner/operator's failure to comply with the service bulletin issued by the kit manufacturer.

## Other reports on N43EM (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 20020825025359I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/20020825025359I), Aug 25, 2002: Amtr RV3 (N43EM), Jefferson, WY, Minor damage. (-23) While in cruise, aircraft loss propeller in flight. Landed without further incident on dirt road. Aircraft was not inspected within the last 12 months.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
