## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT WAS DENSE FOG METEOROLOGICAL IFR CONDITIONS. THE PILOT DID NOT HOLD AN INSTRUMENT RATING AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS NOT IFR CERTIFIED. PILOT WAS UNABLE TO LAND AT THE PETALUMA AIRPORT AND WAS TURNING SOUTH TRYING TO DUCK BELOW THE FOG WHEN HE STRUCK THE HILL SIDE IN DENSE AT NIGHT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX06LA275](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX06LA275), Aug 28, 2006: Terry Tevis RV-6A (N312RV), Novato, CA, substantial damage, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain terrain clearance while maneuvering. Rising terrain, fog and dark night conditions were factors.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
