## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON AUGUST 27, 2006, AT 1208Z, UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 525, AN AIRBUS A-320-232, ENROUTE FROM BOSTON MA TO CHICAGO, IL (ORD), REPORTED FUMES IN THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED ON RUNWAY 9R AT 1215Z, AND EXITED AT TAXIWAY M5. UPON STOPPING ON M5 THE CAPTAIN INITIATED AN EMERGENCY EVACUATION DUE TO THE HEAVY ACRID SMELL AND HAZE. THE EXITS USED DURING THIS EVACUATION WERE 1L, BOTH OVERWING EXITS, AND 2L. EXITS 1R AND 2R WERE NOT USED. 2R WAS NOT USED BECAUSE THE GIRT BAR RETRACTED (FAILED) ALLOWED THE SLIDE/RAFT ASSEMBLY TO DEPART THE AIRCRAFT. THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT STATIONED AT THAT DOOR (2R) BLOCKED ITS PATH AND REDIRECTED THE PASSENGERS TO THE OTHER USABLE EXITS. 1R WAS NOT USED BECAUSE THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT AT THAT POSITION WAS BLOCKED BY PASSENGERS ATTEMPTING TO EXIT THE AIRCRAFT VIA THE 1L SERVICE DOOR AND SHE WAS UNABLE TO GET THE DOOR TO OPEN IT. EIGHT PERSONS EXITED THE 1L DOOR AND THE REMAINING PERSONS EXITED VIA THE OVERWING AND 2L EXITS. MOST OF THE PASSENGERS WERE IN COACH AND THIS WOULD ACCOUNT FOR THE FACT THAT MOST EXITED THE VIA REAR EXITS. THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS ESTIMATED THAT IT TOOK NO MORE THAN 35 TO 40 SECONDS FOR THE ENTIRE EVACUATION. TWO MINOR INJURIES REPORTED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
