## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) A HAWKER 800-XP JET WAS ON AN IFR, FAR PART 91K FLIGHT FROM KCRQ (CARLSBAD, CA) TO KRNO (RENO, NEVADA) AT 16000 FEET. THE AIRCRAFT HAD JUST CHANGED FREQUENCIES TO RENO APPROACH CONTROL, BUT PRIOR TO CONTACTING RENO IMPACTED A GLIDER OVER THE PINE NUT MOUNTAIN RANGE. THE GLIDER DID NOT HAVE ITS TRANSPONDER TURNED ON. THE RIGHT WING OF THE GLIDER WAS SEVERED FROM THE FUSELAGE AND THE GLIDER PILOT EXITED THE AIRFRAME AND PARACHUTED SAFELY TO THE GROUND WHERE HE WAS RESCUED A FEW HOURS LATER. THE HAWKER JET NOSE AREA WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL HAD ERUPTED INTO THE LAPS OF THE FLIGHT CREW. THE JET'S RIGHT ENGINE FAILED DUE TO GLIDER PARTS INGESTION. THE CREW CONTINUED A DESCENT AND TALKING WITH RENO APPROACH CONTROL, IDENTIFIED THE CARSON CITY AIRPORT WHERE THEY OPTED TO LAND WITH THE LANDING GEAR UP DUE TO THE NORMAL LANDING SYSTEM INOPERATIVE DUE TO LOSS OF HYDRAULIC PRESSURE. NO INJURIES TO ANY PASSENGERS, ALTHOUGH ONE PASSENGER STATED THAT WHEN HE TIGHTENED HIS SEAT BELT, ONE SIDE OF THE BELT WAS NOT CONNECTED TO A SECURE POINT, SO HE CHANGED SEATS AND, AGAIN, WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO TIGHTEN THE SEAT BELT, ONE END OF THE SECOND SEAT BELT WAS NOT SECURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX06FA277](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX06FA277), Aug 28, 2006: Raytheon Hawker 800XP (N879QS), Smith, NV, substantial damage. Probable cause: The failure of the glider pilot to utilize his transponder and the high closure rate of the two aircraft, which limited each pilot's opportunity to see and avoid the other aircraft.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
