## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ PILOT STATED HE WAS CATCHING THERMALS OVER PINE NUT RIDGE AT 16,000 TO 17,000 MSL AND SOUTHWEST OF SEAGUL MOUNTAIN. HE SAID HE WAS CIRCLING TO LEFT IN 30 DEGREE BANK AT 55 KNOTS WHEN HE SAW THE TWIN ENGINE JET COMING FROM THE SOUTH. HE ESTIMATED THAT ONE SECOND LATER THE JET HIT HIS RIGHT WING AND HIS GLIDER WENT INTO A FLAT SPIN. HE SAID HIS RIGHT WING WAS OFF AND CANOPY WAS HALF OPEN. HE SAID HE OPENED THE CANOPY, LEANED OR STEPPED OUT, PULLED HIS RIP CORD, AND THEN WATCHED HIS GLIDER FALLING. HE PARACHUTED TO THE GROUND WITHOUT INJURY AND WAS PICKED UP BEFORE DARK. HIS GLIDER WAS DESTROYED. THE TWIN JET AIRPLANE HAD SEVERE NOSE AND FORWARD FUSELAGE DAMAGES THAT EXTENDED BACK INTO THE CABIN AND ITS RIGHT ENGINE FAILED DUE TO INGESTION OF GLIDER PARTS. THE JET WAS ABLE TO LAND GEAR-UP AT THE CARSON CITY, NEVADA AIRPORT WITH SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. ONE OF THE FIVE OCCUPANTS OF THE JET (PILOT) SUFFERED MINOR FACIAL INJURIES. THE GLIDER PILOT STATED THAT HE HAD THE TRANSPONDER OFF BECAUSE HE WAS STAYING IN THE LOCAL AREA AND WANTED TO SAVE BATTERY POWER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX06FA277](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX06FA277), Aug 28, 2006: Schleicher ASW27-18 (N7729), Smith, NV, substantial damage. Probable cause: The failure of the glider pilot to utilize his transponder and the high closure rate of the two aircraft, which limited each pilot's opportunity to see and avoid the other aircraft.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
