SOON AFTER, THE ENGINE FAILED. THE PILOT CRASHED INTO SOME SMALL TREES. THERE WAS SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT AND THE PILOT HAD MINOR INJURIES. THE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THERE WERE 5 GALLONS IN THE RIGHT TANK THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING ON. A MAINTENANCE WITNESS THAT SAW THE AIRCRAFT TAKE OFF EARLIER STATED THE ENGINE HAD AN AUTOMOBILE ELECTRONIC IGNITION IN IT AND IF THE BATTERY WAS DRAINED DOWN, TURNING ON THE LANDING LIGHT COULD CAUSE THE ELECTRONIC IGNITION TO FAIL. THE PILOT HAD LACERATIONS TO HIS FACE THAT REQUIRED STITCHES. THE PILOT HAD DETACHED HIS SHOULDER HARNESS HALFWAY INTO THE FLIGHT IN ORDER TO CHECK HIS FUEL SELECTOR.

## NTSB investigation

None matched to this report by aircraft and date. Search the NTSB's own records: https://data.ntsb.gov/carol-main-public/basic-search

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
