## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT STATED THAT HE TOOK OFF FROM RUNWAY 32R AND FLEW A RIGHT TRAFFIC PATTERN TO PICK UP A BANNER. AFTER CAPTURING THE BANNER HE APPLIED AFT PRESSURE ON THE STICK TO INITIATE A CLIMB. HE HEARD SOMETHING SNAPPED AND THE ELEVATOR CONTROL PRESSURE WAS LOST. HE REACHED FOR THE AFT CONTROL STICK LOCATED BEHIND THE FORWARD SEAT, AND THERE WAS NO CONTROL PRESSURE THERE EITHER. HE REDUCED THE ENGINE POWER AND CRASHED LANDED THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE PROPELLER, ENGINE COWLING, FUSELAGE, AND TAIL WHEEL ASSEMBLY. THE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE ELEVATOR CONTROL CABLE HAD FAILED DUE TO EXTENSIVE CORROSION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC06CA218](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC06CA218), Sep 4, 2006: Bellanca 7GCAA (N5501A), Farmingdale, NC, substantial damage. Probable cause: An inadequate annual inspection of the airplane, which resulted in a total failure of the elevator cable during flight, and subsequent uncontrolled descent into terrain.

## Other reports on N5501A (1)

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
