## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) N589AA, DC-9-83, WAS BEING OPERATED AS AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 1221 BETWEEN OMAHA, NE, AND DALLAS, TX. THE AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO OMAHA AFTER TAKEOFF DUE TO A SMELL IN THE CABIN. THE AIRPLANE LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. CONTRACT MAINTENANCE COULD FIND NO EVIDENCE OF MECHANICAL FAILURE. THEY OPERATED THE AIR CONDITIONING PACKS WITH APU AND ENGINE POWER. NO ODOR WAS DETECTED. MAINTENANCE DETERMINED THAT RESIDUE FROM THE PREVIOUS ARRIVAL THRU A BUG SWARM HAD CAUSED THE ODOR ON TAKEOFF.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
