## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2006 ABOUT 1620 ALASKA DAYLIGHT TIME, A FLOAT EQUIPPED DE HAVILLAND DHC-2 AIRPLANE, N836KA, WAS DESTROYED WHEN IT IMPACTED TERRAIN AT THE 2700 FT LEVEL OF MYSTIC PASS, 54 MILES NORTHWEST OF SKWENTNA, ALASKA. THE FLIGHTS OF TWO AIRCRAFT DEPARTED A HUNTING CAMP ON THE WAY TO ANCHORAGE, ALASKA AND ELECTED TO FLY THROUGH MYSTIC PASS. ACCORDING TO THE AIRMAN OF THE NON ACCIDENT AIRCRAFT, THE WEATHER AND VISIBILITY DETERIORATED TO A POINT WHERE IT WAS DIFFICULT TO DISCERN TOPOGRAPHICAL FEATURES WHILE IN THE PASS. THE SECOND AIRCRAFT ELECTED TO TURN AROUND AND NOTIFIED THE OTHER PILOT BY RADIO. THE ACCIDENT AIRCRAFT TRANSMISSION WAS IN PART, "TURN AROUND IF YOU CAN....I AM NOT ABLE TO." ON SEPTEMBER 18, 2006, AN FAA INSPECTOR VISITED THE SITE AND HIS INVESTIGATION INDICATED THAT THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT WAS MOST LIKELY CONTROLLED FLIGHT INTO TERRAIN (CFIT).

Probable cause: The pilot's continued VFR flight into instrument meteorological conditions, which resulted in an in-flight collision with mountainous terrain. A factor associated with the accident was a low cloud…
