## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON OCTOBER 17, 2006 BEECHCRAFT BARON 58 N640LS WAS ENROUTE FROM LITTLE ROCK, AR TO BLOOMINGTON, IL AT 9000FT. THE PILOT REPORTED A POPPING NOISE FROM THE LEFT ENGINE FOLLOWED BY EXCESSIVE VIBRATION. THE PILOT IMMEDIATELY FEATHERED THE LEFT ENGINE AND CALLED ST. LOUIS APPROACH AND DECLARED AN EMERGENCY DUE TO LOSS OF ENGINE. THE PILOT DIVERTED TO STL AND LANDED SAFELY ON RWY 24 WITHOUT INCIDENT. INVESTIGATION REVEALED A TWO INCH HOLE IN THE TOP OF THE CRANKCASE. A CRACK RADIATED FROM THE HOLE, DOWN THE LEFT HALF OF THE CASE TO THE SUMP. ANOTHER CRACK RADIATED FROM THE HOLE DOWN THE RIGHT HALF OF CASE TO THE CYLINDER BASE. LEFT HAND MAGNETO AND THE TACH DRIVE GENERATOR HAD BEEN SHAKEN OFF OF ENGINE. MIDCOAST AVIATION MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL HAD INTERNAL PICTURES TAKEN THRU A BOROSCOPE. THOSE PICTURES SHOWED EXTENSIVE INTERNAL DAMAGE. ENGINE TSO:907.3.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
