## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PRIVATE PILOT WAS RECEIVING A FAMILIARIZATION AND CHECK-OUT FLIGHT FOR THE XL-2 MODEL FROM A COMPANY EMPLOYED CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR (CFI). DURING TOUCH AND GO LANDING PRACTICE ON RUNWAY 27R, THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN HARD AND BECAME AIRBORNE AGAIN. THE CFI REPORTEDLY ATTEMPTED TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE FROM THE PRIVATE PILOT TO EXECUTE A RECOVERY AND GO-AROUND, BUT THE PRIVATE PILOT DID NOT RELINQUISH CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE TO HER. THE AIRPLANE DRIFTED OFF TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND IMPACTED TERRAIN AND SCRUB BRUSH WHERE IT CAME TO REST. THE LEFT WING AND FUSELAGE SUSTAINED STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. THE PRIVATE PILOT AND CFI WERE NOT INJURED (BOTH WERE WEARING SHOULDER HARNESSES AND SEAT BELTS). THE WINDS AT THE TIME WERE GUSTING FROM THE NORTHWEST. THE 1153 (LOCAL) MLB METAR OBSERVATION REPORTED THE WINDS FROM 300 DEGREES AT 15 KNOTS GUSTING TO 18 KNOTS. A SPECIAL OBSERVATION AT 1229 REPORTED THE WINDS FROM 310 DEGREES AT 11 KNOTS GUSTING TO 18 KNOTS. THE MAX DEMONSTRATED CROSSWIND FOR THE XL-2 IS 15 KNOTS ACCORDING TO THE XL-2 FLIGHT MANUAL.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA07CA020](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA07CA020), Nov 21, 2006: Liberty Aerospace XL-2 (N508XL), Melbourne, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's (Dual Student) failure to relinquish control of the airplane when instructed by the certified flight instructor resulting in airspeed not being maintained and an inadvertent stall.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
