## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON DECEMBER 10, 2006 AT APPROXIMATELY 1520 HOURS LOCAL TIME, A PRIVATE PILOT AND HIS NON RATED PASSENGER WERE MAKING A LOW PASS DOWN RUNWAY 09 AT ABOUT 100 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND. THE AIRPLANE WAS OBSERVED IN A SLOW STEADY CLIMB OVER TREES ON THE DEPARTURE END, THE AIRPLANE MADE A SHARP LEFT TURN, THE NOSE PITCHED DOWN ABOUT 45 DEGREES FOLLOWED BY AN INCREASE IN ENGINE POWER. THE NOSE CONTINUED TO PITCH DOWN AND THE AIRCRAFT DISAPPEARED BEHIND TREES AND IMPACTED THE GROUND. THE IMPACT RESULTED WITH TWO FATALITIES AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED IN THE POST IMPACT FIRE. NOTE: HOURS MAKE AND MODEL WERE BASED ON A STATEMENT MADE BY A FRIEND OF THE PILOT. REGULATORY CHECK RIDE DATE WAS PROVIDED BY THE CFI HAVING CONDUCTED THE CHECK RIDE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL07LA025](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL07LA025), Dec 10, 2006: Fagan Rans S-6S (N949S), Taylorsville, NC, destroyed, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The pilots failure to maintain airspeed while maneuvering resulting in an inadvertent stall, uncontrolled decent, collision with the ground, and a post crash fire.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
