## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) N9396F WAS ON LOCAL TRAINING FLIGHT FOR HELICOPTER CFI RATING. STUDENT PILOT AT THE CONTROLS ON CLIMBOUT WHEN AIRCRAFT EXPERIENCED A SHUDDER AT APPROXIMATELY 400 FEET. STUDENT TRANSFERRED CONTROLS TO INSTRUCTOR AND INSTRUCTOR BEGAN A CROSSWIND TURN. AT THAT POINT, THE ENGINE FAILED AND THE INSTRUCTOR EXECUTED LOW AIRSPEED, LOW ALTITUDE AUTOROTATION BACK TOWARD THE AIRPORT. INSTRUCTOR ATTEMPTED TO CUSHION LANDING WITH FULL UP COLLECTIVE APPROXIMATELY ONE HALF MILE FROM THE END OF RUNWAY 30 BUT AIRCRAFT HIT HARD AND BROKE APART, SUSTAINING HEAVY DAMAGE. BOTH PILOTS EGRESSED WITHOUT INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DFW07CA037](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DFW07CA037), Dec 11, 2006: Hughes 269B (N9396F), Houma, LA, substantial damage. Probable cause: A partial loss of engine power as a result of a cracked engine cylinder and broken spark plug which resulted in a hard landing. A factor was that it was not possible to attain proper rotor RPM.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
