## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JANUARY 3, 2007 AT APPROX 1445 HRS LOCAL TIME, AIRCRAFT N113JD, ROTORWAY/EXEC 162F DEPARTED PAOLA, KANSAS (MIAMI COUNTY AIRPORT K81), WITH ONE PASSENGER ON BOARD. APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES IN FLIGHT (AT 1600 FT MSL), THEY HEARD A POP NOISE FROM BEHIND FOLLOWED BY AN UNCOMMANDED 90 DEGREE TURN TO THE LEFT. PILOT IMMEDIATELY LOWERED COLLECTIVE AND ENTERED AN AUTOROTATION. WHILE POINTED TOWARD A CLEAR PASTURE, ANOTHER NOISE WAS HEARD FOLLOWED AGAIN BY ANOTHER UNCOMMANDED 90 DEGREE LH TURN. AT THAT TIME THEY WERE DIRECTLY 50 FT ABOVE SOME TREES. PILOT FLARED ABOVE TREES AND ALLOWED AIRCRAFT TO SETTLE ON TOP OF THE TREES AS HE RAISED THE COLLECTIVE. ABOUT 10-15 FT ABOVE THE GROUND, THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED TO THE LEFT AND CAME TO REST UPSIDE DOWN. THE PILOT SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES (BROKEN LEFT LEG). THE PASSENGER WAS NOT INJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DEN07LA044](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DEN07LA044), Jan 3, 2007: Marino Exec 162F-1995 (N113JD), Baldwin City, KS, substantial damage. Probable cause: the failure of the tail rotor drive belt for undetermined reasons. A contributing factor was the lack of suitable terrain for the forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
