## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) APPROACHING 5W8 IT WAS DECIDED TO PRACTICE AN ENGINE OUT LANDING. AT APPROXIMATELY 3 TO 4 MILES AT 4000 FEET THE ENGINE WAS PULLED TO IDLE. BEST GLIDE WAS ESTABLISHED AT 90 KNOTS. THE AIRCRAFT APPROACHED THE RUNWAY (22) AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. THE AIRCRAFT WAS CONFIGURED WITH NO FLAPS. A DESCENDING LEFT TURN OVER THE RUNWAY WAS NECESSARY TO ALIGN THE AIRCRAFT WITH THE RUNWAY. DURING THIS MANEUVER THE LEFT WING STRUCK THE RUNWAY AND THE AIRCRAFT TURNED 20 DEGREES TO THE LEFT AND SLAMMED INTO THE RUNWAY. MARKINGS ON THE RUNWAY INDICATED THAT THE WHEEL FAIRINGS WERE DRAGGING THE RUNWAY AND THE PROP STRUCK THE RUNWAY 7 TIMES. IT APPEARS THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED UP AND RETURNED BACK DOWN IN THE GRASS JUST PAST THE VASI LIGHTS. IT PROCEEDED THRU THE GRASS UNTIL IT HIT A DRAIN PIPE AND NOSE GEAR SHEARED OFF FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT BECAME AIRBORNE AGAIN AND CAME BACK DOWN ABOUT 50 FEET PAST THE DRAIN PIPE AND PROCEEDED THRU THE GRASS UNTIL IT HIT A ROCK PILE AND THE ROCKS DAMAGED THE FUSELAGE. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST ABOUT 60 FEET PAST THE ROCK PILE. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL07CA035](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL07CA035), Jan 28, 2007: Cirrus Design SR-22 (N221GW), Siler City, NC, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to perform an aborted landing which resulted in an inflight collision with the runway.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
