## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) MOKU 979 WAS A REPOSITION FERRY FLIGHT FROM HNL TO OGG. THERE WAS ONE FLIGHT ATTENDANT AND TWO DEADHEADING PILOTS IN THE CABIN. THE PIC WAS OF THE OPINION THAT THERE WAS AN AIRSPEED INDICATION ANOMALY. HE REQUESTED ONE OF THE DEADHEADING PILOTS TO VISUALLY CHECK THE POSITION OF THE FLAPS. THE PILOT DID THAT, AND WENT TO THE COCKPIT TO REPORT HIS FINDINGS. WHEN HE WAS RETURNING TO HIS SEAT THE A/C ENCOUNTERED SEVERE TURBULENCE AND HE WAS BOUNCED OFF THE CEILING TWO TIMES AND SUSTAINED BACK INJURIES THAT WERE TEMPORARILY INCAPACITATING. HE FELL TO THE CABIN FLOOR AND WAS UNABLE TO GET UP. THE PIC DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THE INJURED DEADHEADING PILOT WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. AN XRAY EXAMINATION REVEALED HE HAD SUSTAINED A FRACTURE OF THE L-1 VERTEBRAE. THE ATC AUDIO TAPE FROM HNL HCF INDICATES THAT TWO A/C REPORTED MODERATE TURBULENCE IN THE VICINITY, AND ONE OF THOSE A/C REPORTED OCCASIONAL SEVERE TURBULENCE. THOSE PIREPS WERE MADE MINUTES BEFORE MOKU 979 CHECKED IN WITH OGG APCON, BUT THAT INFORMATION WAS NOT RELAYED TO MOKU 979.
