## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) WACO N30140 STRUCK STEARMAN N49270, AS THE WACO WAS ATTEMPTING TO CLIMB SO THAT HE COULD FORM UP ON THE LEFT WING OF ANOTHER STEARMAN, N48994 THAT WAS IN THE LEAD FORMATION OF A FLIGHT OF 2 AIRCRAFT. THE PILOT DID NOT MAKE RADIO CONTACT WITH EITHER AIRCRAFT BEFORE MAKING THE MANEUVER TO JOIN THE FORMATION. WACO N30140 STRUCK STEARMAN N49270 ON THE LEFT WING AND TAIL SECTION, THEN STRUCK THE PROPELLER OF THE STEARMAN N49270. THE WACO LANDED ON THE BEACH AT CABRILLO BEACH, SAN PEDRO, CA.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX07LA079](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX07LA079), Feb 3, 2007: Waco UPF-7 (N30140), Palos Verdes, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: the failure of both pilots to maintain adequate visual lookout and clearance from each other while maneuvering in close proximity.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
