THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT THEN DISCHARGED TWO HALON FIRE EXTINGUISHERS WHICH SUCCESSFULLY PUT OUT THE FIRE, AND THE SMOKE BEGAN TO SUBSIDE AT THAT POINT. THE ENTIRE EVENT LASTED APPROXIMATELY 3 MINUTES ACCORDING TO THE INFLIGHT CREW. THE FLIGHT CREW DECLARED AN EMERGENCY WITH NY TRACON AND REQUESTED AN IMMEDIATE RETURN TO JFK. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED AND TAXIED TO GATE WITHOUT INCIDENT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC07IA063](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC07IA063), Feb 10, 2007: Airbus A-320-232 (N648JB), New York, NY, incident, no damage. Probable cause: The in-flight fire which was caused by the catastrophic failure of a 9-volt battery from an unknown cause.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
