## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT AND HIS PASSENGER DEPARTED RUNWAY 18 AT SOUTH LAKE TAHOE AIRPORT (TVL) ON A VFR FLIGHT TO POLO ALTO AIRPORT (PAO). PRIOR TO DEPARTURE, THE AIRCRAFT WAS FUELED TO CAPACITY, 32 IMPERIAL GALLONS (38.4 US GALLONS). THE PILOT INTENDED TO FOLLOW HIGHWAY 50 THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS; HOWEVER, EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTY IN CLIMBING FROM TVL. THE PILOT ELECTED TO CIRCLE OVER MEYERS, CA TO GAIN SUFFICIENT ALTITUDE TO PASS-OVER ECHO SUMMIT. IN CONVERSATION WITH THE PASSENGER, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT DURING THE CIRCLING CLIMB, THE PILOT FLEW SOUTH OF MEYERS EVEN HIGHER INTO THE MOUNTAINS. THE PASSENGER STATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS UNABLE TO CLIMB OR MAINTAIN ALTITUDE AND THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK A TREE WITH THE RIGHT WING. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST INVERTED IN A PASTURE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX07LA122](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX07LA122), Apr 8, 2007: Scottish Bulldog 120 (N706X), So Lake Tahoe, CA, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from objects and the mountainous terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
