## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT DEPARTED WILLIAMSPORT, PA (IPT) IN AN ATTEMPT TO SET A LONG DISTANCE GLIDER RECORD. THE PILOT REPORTED DURING CRUISE FLIGHT, WHICH WAS AT RIDGE-TOP LEVEL IN VERY MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN, THAT HE ENCOUNTERED SEVERE WINDS WHICH INCLUDED ROTATING WINDS IN EXCESS OF 50 KNOTS. THE EFFECT OF THE ROTATING AND SHEER WINDS ALONG WITH THE PROXIMITY TO A RIDGE-TOP CAUSED THE LOSS OF FLIGHT CONTROL EFFECTIVENESS WHICH RESULTED IN THE AIRCRAFT CRASHING APPROXIMATELY 100' BELOW A RIDGE-TOP. THE AIRCRAFT WRECKAGE WAS LOCATED IN A VERY REMOTE AREA ACCESSIBLE ONLY BY FOOT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED AND THE PILOT SUFFERED SEVERE INJURIES TO HIS LEGS AND ARMS.

## NTSB investigation

None matched to this report by aircraft and date. Search the NTSB's own records: https://data.ntsb.gov/carol-main-public/basic-search

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
