## Narrative

(-23) ON APRIL 24, 2007 AT 1100 MDT A MAULE MXT-7-180 LOST CONTROL DURING A CROSSWIND LANDING AT AN ABANDONED, PRIVATELY OWNED AIRPORT NEAR SIERRA BLANCA, TEXAS. THE AIRCRAFT, N800CP, REGISTERED TO EYES ON THE BORDER FOUNDATION, RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AND THE PILOT AND PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS EXISTED AT THE TIME. THE AIRCRAFT WAS OPERATING UNDER TITLE 14 CFR PART 91 IN SUPPORT OF THE HUDSPETH COUNTY, TEXAS SHERIFF'S OFFICE. THE FLIGHT HAD ORIGINATED AT HORIZON AIRPORT (T27) IN EL PASO, TX AND HAD MADE ONE LANDING AT THE ABANDONED AIRPORT EARLIER IN THE DAY. A VFR FLIGHT PLAN WAS NOT FILED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DFW07CA101](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DFW07CA101), Apr 24, 2007: Maule MXT-7-180 (N800CP), Sierra Blanca, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: The loss of control as result of the pilot's failure to compensate for the existing wind conditions. A contributing factor was the crosswind.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
