## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE HELICOPTER WAS ENGAGED IN INSTRUCTION AT THE NORTH COUNTY AIRPORT (F45) WHICH IS LOCATED IN WEST PALM BEACH, FL. WHILE WORKING IN THE TRAFFIC PATTERN AT 500 FEET AGL THE STUDENT PULLED THE MIXTURE CONTROL TO THE CUTOFF POSITION. THIS ACTION RESULTED IN THE ENGINE LOSING POWER, WHICH CAUSED THE INSTRUCTOR TO ENTER AUTOROTATION. THE FORCED LANDING TO A NEARBY FIELD WAS UNSUCCESSFUL, AND THE HELICOPTER WAS DESTROYED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES REPORTED AS A RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT.

Probable cause: The student pilot's inadvertent shutting off of the mixture control while performing the prelanding checks that resulted loss of engine power and a roll over during the subsequent forced landing.
