## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS PILOTING A CESSNA 172 (N68166) AT AN ALTITUDE OF 2500 FEET ON A FLIGHT FROM PAINE FIELD TO GOLD BAR, WASHINGTON FOR AIR PRACTICE WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY LOST POWER. THE ENGINE RPM DROPPED FROM 2300 TO 1200 AND WOULD NOT RECOVER. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ STATED HE APPLIED CARBURETOR HEAT WHILE SETTING UP BEST GLIDE SPEED AND CHECKED THE MAGNETOS. HE LOCATED AN EMERGENCY LANDING SITE ON A FARMER'S CATTLE PASTURE. EVEN THOUGH HE FORGOT TO USE FLAPS, HE MADE A SUCCESSFUL EMERGENCY LANDING. THE ONLY DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT WAS A COLLAPSED NOSE LANDING GEAR AND SEPARATED PROPELLER. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ALSO STATED HE REFUELED THE AIRCRAFT TO FULL TANKS BEFORE DEPARTURE AT PAINE FIELD.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX07LA155](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX07LA155), May 10, 2007: Cessna 152 (N68166), Monroe, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power during cruise due to carburetor icing, and the pilot's delay in using carburetor heat.

## Other reports on N68166 (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19810815047579A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19810815047579A), Aug 15, 1981: Cessna 152 (N68166), Northway, AK, Substantial damage. Ran out of fuel en route. Flipped over on emergency landing on tundra. Fuel gauges inaccurate.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
