## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON MAY 21, 2007, AT 0834 EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME, AN EXPERIMENTAL, AMATEUR-BUILT, WOOD EVAN, VANS RV-7A, N7259N, SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AFTER IMPACT WITH A RUNWAY SIGN, FOLLLOWED BY TERRAIN DURING AN ATTEMPTED LANDING AND GO AROUND FROM RUNWAY 27 AT THE UNION COUNTY AIRPORT, NEAR MARYSVILLE, OHIO. THE PERSONAL FLIGHT WAS OPERATING UNDER 14 CFR PART 91. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. NO FLIGHT PLAN WAS ON FILE. THE TWO OCCUPANTS ONBOARD THE AIRPLANE, A PRIVATE PILOT OCCUPYING THE LEFT SEAT AND A COMMERCIAL PILOT OCCUPYING THE RIGHT SEAT, SUSTAINED FATAL INJURIES. THE FLIGHT DEPARTED FROM THE JAMES CLEMENTS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT, NEAR BAY CITY, MICHIGAN, AT APPROXIMATELY 0715 (LOCAL), ENROUTE TO UNION COUNTY AIRPORT, NEAR MARYSVILLE, OHIO. AFTER TOUCHING DOWN ON RUNWAY 27, WITH RIGHT QUARTERLY TAIL WIND AND A LIMITED AMOUNT OF RUNWAY REMAINING, THE AIRCRAFT VEERED OFF THE RUNWAY AND ONTO THE GRASS. TIRE MARKINGS PRESENT ON THE RUNWAY SHOW THE TRACK OF THE AIRCRAFT DIVERGING FROM THE RUNWAY, THROUGH THE GRASS AND DIRECTLY INTO THE TAXIWAY "ALPHA" SIGN AT THE END OF RUNWAY 27 (APPROACH END OF 09). NUMEROUS AIRCRAFT PARTS MATCHING THE AIRCRAFT WERE FOUND AMONG THE REMNANTS OF THE DESTROYED TAXIWAY SIGN. IN ADDITION, PROPELLER SLASHES IN THE TAXIWAY SIGN WERE ALSO NOTED. APPROXIMATELY A MILE AWAY, THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE TERRAIN RESULTING IN TWO FATALITIES. AT 0845 (LOCAL), THE RECORDED AUTOMATED OBSERVATION WEATHER AT UNION COUNTY AIRPORT (MRT) WAS WIND: 070 (ENE) AT 5 KNOTS, VISIBILITY: 10 MILES, CEILING: OVERCAST 1900 FEET, TEMPERATURE: 11 DEGREES C, DEW POINT: 8 DEGREES C, ALTIMETER: 30.19 INCHES OF MERCURY. CORRESPONDING METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS IN THE VICINITY AT THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY AIRPORT, NEAR COLUMBUS, OHIO, WERE WIND: 060 DEGREES AT 6 KNOTS, VISIBILITY: 10 STATUTE MILES, SKY CONDITION: OVERCAST 2,300 FEET, TEMPERATURE: 11 DEGREES C, DEW POINT: 7 DEGREES C, ALTIMETER: 30.19 INCHES OF MERCURY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI07LA150](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI07LA150), May 21, 2007: Wood Vans RV7A (N7259N), Marysville, OH, substantial damage, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from an object during a go-around and subsequent failure to maintain adequate airspeed. An airport sign and an inadvertent stall were factors.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
