## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PIC REPORTED SMOKE IN THE CABIN AND ENGINE POWER LOSS IN FLIGHT. PILOT DIVERTED HIS ROUTE OF FLIGHT TO LAND AT THE NEAREST SUITABLE AIRPORT WHICH WAS FAIRVIEW AIRPORT, LANDRUM, SC (33A). DUE TO THE HEAVY AMOUNT OF SMOKE IN THE CABIN HIS APPROACH TO LAND WAS TOO HIGH AND TOO FAST, HE ELECTED TO LAND LONG AND DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH RUNWAY REMAINING TO STOP IN THE HARD SURFACE. HE DEPARTED THE HARD SURFACE AND CAME TO A STOP APPROXIMATELY 100 YARDS IN THE GRASS OVER-RUN CAUSING MINOR DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. FURTHER INSPECTION BY AN FAA RATED MECHANIC DISCLOSED THAT AN ENGINE VALVE BROKE LOOSE CAUSING THE PISTON TO FAIL AND ALLOWED ENGINE OIL TO BE DUMPED INTO THE ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
