## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) MISHAP PILOT EXPERIENCED LOSS OF ENGINE POWER WITH STUDENT PILOT WHILE ON A TRAINING FLIGHT EARLIER THAT MORNING. THE FUEL SELECTOR WAS MOVED TO THE OTHER TANK AND ENGINE POWER WAS RESTORED. THE AIRCRAFT WAS RETURNED TO H49 WITHOUT ANY FURTHER EVENT. MECHANIC TOOK FUEL SAMPLES, DRAINED FUEL TANKS, CHECKED FUEL SCREENS, CHECKED FUEL LINES AND FUEL TANK VENTS FOR OBSTRUCTIONS. MECHANIC PERFORMED MINOR MAINTENANCE ON THE FUEL SELECTOR VALVE AND PERFORMED ENGINE RUNUP WITHOUT DISCREPANCY. THE MISHAP PILOT WAS CALLED FOR A MAINTENANCE TEST FLIGHT. THE ENGINE RUNUP WITH THE PILOT SHOWED NO DISCREPANCY. THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED H49 WITH THE MECHANIC ON BOARD FOR THE MAINTENANCE TEST FLIGHT. WHILE TURNING THE BASE LEG FROM DOWNWIND THE ENGINE LOST POWER. SWITCHING FUEL TANKS HAD NO EFFECT. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED OFF THE AIRPORT IN A CORNFIELD.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

Probable cause: The certified flight instructor's (CFI's) inadequate preflight planning/preparation of a test altitude that would afford an on airport landing in the event of engine power loss. Additional causes…

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
