## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT APPROACHED THE HENDERSON AIRPORT FROM THE SOUTH, AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO ENTER A RIGHT DOWNWIND FOR LANDING ON RUNWAY 17R. ONCE ABEAM HIS LANDING POINT, AIRMAN LOWERED HIS GEAR AND DEPLOYED 10 DEGREES OF FLAPS. AIRMAN STATED THAT HE WAS ON A STABILIZED APPROACH AND FLYING THE VASI INBOUND. AIRMAN STATED THAT HIS APPROACH SPEED WAS 80 KTS ALTHOUGH ONCE HE WAS ON THE FINAL SEGMENT TO LANDING HE WAS CONSTANTLY DRIFTING FROM CENTERLINE DUE TO THE CROSSWIND. NOTE: CROSSWIND WAS 240/15. ONCE CLOSE TO THE FLARE, AIRMAN CONTINUED TO RE-ALIGN FOR THE CROSSWIND, AND TOUCHED DOWN VERY HARD. THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED BACK INTO THE AIR, AT WHICH TIME THE AIRMAN ELECTED TO MAKE A GO-AROUND. AIRMAN APPLIED FULL POWER AND ATTEMPTED THE GO-AROUND HOWEVER HIS PITCH ATTITUDE UNDER THE EXISTING DENSITY ALTIUDE CONDITIONS MAY HAVE BEEN TOO ABRUPT. FROM AN ALTITUDE OF APPROXIMATELY 20 FEET THE AIRCRAFT SETTLED BACK TO THE RUNWAY AND HIT HARD. AT THIS POINT THERE WAS A LOSS OF CONTROL AND THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE RUNWAY IN AN EASTERLY DIRECTION, EXITING THE RUNWAY AT APPROXIMATELY THE 3,000 FOOT MARKER. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST WITHIN A GULLEY LOCATED ADJACENT TO RUNWAY 17R, WHEREIN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE OCCURRED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain control of the airplane during the attempted go-around, which resulted in a hard landing. A contributing factor was the crosswind.
