## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PIC STATED THAT LAUNCH USING RUNWAY 30, AND CLIMB OUT WERE NORMAL UNTIL HE ENCOUNTERED TURBULENCE AND BUMPED HIS HEAD ON THE CANOPY. PIC NOTIFIED TOW PILOT OF TURBULENCE BY RADIO AND EXPERIENCED TURBULENCE AND BUMPED HEAD AGAIN. THE SECOND TIME HE HIT HIS HEAD, HE INADVERTENTLY PULLED THE TOW LINE RELEASE CABLE. PIC STATED THAT HE IMMEDIATELY TURNED LEFT AND PITCHED NOSE DOWN IN AN ATTEMPT TO RETURN TO THE AIRPORT. PIC STATED THAT HE REALIZED HE WASN'T GOING TO MAKE THE AIRPORT AND LEVELED WINGS JUST BEFORE HITTING TREES. AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST IN A LARGE TREE APPROXIMATELY 40 FT ABOVE GROUND.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL07CA101](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL07CA101), Jul 1, 2007: Schempp-Hirth Discus-CS (N42CA), Freehold, NY, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadvertent activation of the tow release handle at a low altitude following an encounter with turbulence.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
