## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ (78 YEARS OLD PILOT) WAS FLYING FOR APPROX. 20 MINUTES AND SEEN CROSSING THE 44B AIRPORT TO ENTER DOWNWIND BUT NOT SEEN AGAIN. HE CRASHED ON A SHORT (1/8 MILE) BASE TO FINAL TURN TO RUNWAY 27 (TURF RUNWAY) AT THE 44B AIRPORT IN THE WOODS. HE WAS ABLE TO WALK OUT OF THE WRECKAGE AND AROUND THE SITE THEN APPROX. 1/2 MILE TO A FRIEND'S HOME. THE FRIEND TOOK HIM TO HIS HOME THEN HE WENT TO THE HOSPITAL. HE RECEIVED HEAD AND BODY INJURIES AND STILL REMAINS IN THE BGR EMMC. THE AIRCRAFT ENTERED THE WOODS INVERTED LEAVING A PORTION OF THE LEFT WING IN THE TREES AND DAMAGING THE RIGHT WING WITH SEVERAL MEDIUM SIZE BRANCHES. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED APPROX. 30 FEET BEFORE STRIKING ANOTHER MEDIUM SIZE TREE AND COMING TO REST NOSE FIRST INTO THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT THEN FELL TAIL FIRST INTO ANOTHER TREE AND REMAINED THERE AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. THERE WAS NO FIRE AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WILL BE INTERVIEWED WHEN HE BECOMES MEDICALLY ABLE AND HIS LOGBOOKS REVIEWED - AN AMENDED FAA FORM 8020-23 WILL BE FILED AT THAT TIME. (-23 AMENDMENT) THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ SIGNED THE PREVIOUS FAA FORM 8020-23 NARRATIVE AS HIS STATEMENT ON 08-21-07 DURING HIS 44709 REEXAM.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA07LA124](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA07LA124), Jul 21, 2007: Dennis M. Durgin Junior Ace (N9778N), Dover-Foxcroft, ME, substantial damage. Probable cause: The failure of the pilot to maintain airspeed following total loss of engine power due to fuel starvation, resulting in a stall/mush, uncontrolled descent, and in-flight collision with trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
