## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS INSTRUCTING ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ON LANDING IN THE TAILWHEEL AIRPLANE. THEY AGREED ON DOWNWIND THAT THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WOULD DEMONSTRATE A WHEEL LANDING, WHICH HE DID FROM THE FRONT SEAT OF THE AIRPLANE. AFTER A SLOW, TAIL LOW TOUCHDOWN, THE WIND WEATHERVANED THE AIRPLANE ABOUT 30 DEGREES TO THE RIGHT. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ COUNTERED BY INCREASING POWER AND APPLYING LEFT RUDDER TO REGAIN RUDDER CONTROL. THE AIRPLANE LEFT THE PAVED SURFACE INTO A GRASSY AREA BETWEEN THE RUNWAYS BEFORE HE GOT IT UNDER CONTROL. BY THIS TIME IT HAD REACHED FLYING SPEED, SO HE LIFTED OFF, STRIKING A TAXIWAY MARKER SIGN WITH THE LANDING GEAR WHICH DAMAGED THE LOWER FUSELAGE AND LEFT HORIZONTAL STABILIZER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI07CA247](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI07CA247), Jul 26, 2007: Piper PA-18-135 (N197T), Kansas City, MO, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to manitain directional control during landing which resulted in the airplane striking a taxiway sign during the aborted landing. The crosswind and the sign were factors.

## Other reports on N197T (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19810531038839A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19810531038839A), May 31, 1981: Piper PA18105SPEC (N197T), Opa Locka, FL, Substantial damage. Ground looped tail wheel type arplane on landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
