## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON AUGUST 19, 2007 AT 16:30 HOURS THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS ACTING AS PILOT IN COMMAND OF N5967A, A 145 HP 1956 CESSNA 172. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ATTEMPTED TO TAKE-OFF FROM THE LAKE WENATCHEE AIRPORT TO THE WEST, AND CRASHED INTO TREES APPROXIMATELY 70 FEET IN HEIGHT. THE LAKE WENATCHEE AIRPORT IS A 2,500 FOOT LONG GRASS STRIP SURROUNDED BY TALL EVERGREEN TREES ON ALL SIDES. THE RUNWAY SLOPES DOWN FROM WEST TO EAST INTO LOWER TERRAIN. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ATTEMPTED TO TAKE-OFF TO THE WEST UPHILL INTO RISING TERRAIN. THE AIRPLANE APPARENTLY STALLED AFTER TAKE-OFF, IMPACTED TREES, AND THEN FELL VERTICALLY TO THE GROUND. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS ACCOMPANIED BY ONE ADULT PASSENGER AND TWO CHILDREN. DURING THE POST ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION IT WAS NOTED THAT 115 POUNDS OF CAMPING GEAR WAS LOCATED IN THE AFT BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT TOO. IN A TELEPHONE INTERVIEW THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ESTIMATED HIS TAKE-OFF DISTANCE TO CLEAR A 50 FOOT OBSTACLE WAS 2000 FEET, AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS BELOW THE MAXIMUM GROSS WEIGHT FOR TAKE-OFF.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX07CA254](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX07CA254), Aug 19, 2007: Cessna 172 (N5967A), Leavenworth, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's failure to maintain an adequate clearance from the trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
