## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT ELECTED TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY, OFF-AIRPORT LANDING IN A FIELD, DUE TO LOW FUEL STATE AND DETERIORATING WEATHER. HOWEVER, PILOT LOST CONTROL OF AIRCRAFT DURING LANDING WITH THE RIGHT WING TIP DRAGGING ON THE GROUND, SUBSEQUENTLY CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO PIVOT TO THE RIGHT. THE LEFT MAIN GEAR FOLDED INBOARD AND THE LEFT WING TIP DUG INTO THE GROUND, CAUSING THE OUTERMOST THREE FEET OF THE LEFT WING TO BEND UPWARDS ABOUT THIRTY DEGREES. THIS SIDEWAYS SLIDE ALSO CAUSED THE FUSELAGE TO BUCKLE, JUST BEHIND THE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT AND THE NOSE WHEEL TO COLLAPSE. THE INTENDED LANDING PATH WAS ON AN APPROXIMATE HEADING OF NORTH, AND THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST HEADING APPROXIMATELY 120 DEGREES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC07CA204](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC07CA204), Aug 26, 2007: Cessna 172 (N6670A), Julian, WV, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate preflight planning. Contributing to the accident were the overcast cloud conditions and the pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
