## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT STATED THAT WHILE LANDING A FLOAT EQUIPPED AIRCRAFT ON A SALTWATER BAY IN A SEMI REMOTE REGION OF KODIAK ISLAND IN ALASKA, THE WIND IN THE BAY WAS GUSTING OVER THE LEEWARD SIDE OF TERRAIN CAUSING WIND DOWNBURSTS ONTO THE SURFACE. HE STATED AS THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN AND FINISHED COMING OFF STEP IN THE LANDING TERMINATION, HE COULD SEE A DARK WATER RIPPLE FORMING ON THE WATER AHEAD OF THE AIRCRAFT. AS THE SWIRLING WIND, WHICH WAS CAUSING THE RIPPLE HIT THE AIRCRAFT, IT LIFTED THE LEFT WING CAUSING THE RIGHT WING TO CONTACT THE WATER SURFACE HARD ENOUGH AS TO CAUSE LOWER WING SKIN DAMAGE. THE WIND THEN LIFTED THE TAIL OF THE AIRCRAFT CAUSING IT TO SLOWLY INVERT ONTO THE WATER'S SURFACE. AT THIS POINT THE PILOT CONCENTRATED ON AIRCRAFT EGRESSION FOR THE PASSENGER IN THE RIGHT SEAT, THEN WENT TO THE REAR OF THE AIRPLANE TO ASSIST THE BACK SEAT PASSENGER IN OPENING THE DOOR AND EGRESSION FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THE PILOT AND THE PASSENGERS STAYED WITH THE FLOATING AIRCRAFT FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO MINUTES BEFORE A BOAT ARRIVED TO CARRY THEM TO SHORE. NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THE MISHAP.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC07LA094](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC07LA094), Sep 3, 2007: de Havilland DHC-2 MK1 (N4756T), Kodiak, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate compensation for wind conditions while water taxiing. A factor contributing to the accident was wind gusts.

## Other reports on N4756T (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19880623068699I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19880623068699I), Jun 23, 1988: Dhav DHC2MK1 (N4756T), Old Town, ME, Minor damage. Engine caught fire on start up. Engine was flooded and backfired. Destroyed wiring harness.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
