## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT RAN OFF THE END OF RWY 22 AT SANTA PAULA AIRPORT AFTER A HIGH AND FAST APPROACH WITH THE LANDING FLAPS RETRACTED. THE AIRCRAFT HIT THE FENCE AT THE FAR END OF THE RUNWAY. THE NOSE GEAR SHEARED OFF, AND THE FENCE POSTS STRUCK THE FRONT OF THE WING ON IMPACT. NO "SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE" WAS NOTED ON THE AIRCRAFT. THIS IS OFFICIALLY CLASSIFIED AS AN "INCIDENT." THE AIRCRAFT HAD DEPARTED BRACKETT FIELD WITH FULL FUEL AND THREE OCCUPANTS. AN EYEWITNESS REPORTED SEEING THE AIRCRAFT CIRCLE OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY TWICE, THEN DIVE AT THE RUNWAY WITH THE FLAPS RETRACTED. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ (-23 AMENDMENT) "SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE" WAS PROBABLE IN THIS ACCIDENT, AS MAJOR REPAIR TO THE WINGS OF THE AIRCRAFT WOULD BE REQUIRED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX07CA271](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX07CA271), Sep 9, 2007: Piper PA-28-140 (N1237H), Santa Paula, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's unstabilized approach, which resulted in a hard, bounced landing. Also causal was the pilot's inadequate recovery from the bounced landing and his failure to maintain directional control.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
